The mission, vision and strategy of the Institute of Microbiology and Virology named after D.K. Zabolotny National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Mission of the Institute is to form scientific, innovative and educational foundations that meet today's requirements in the field of microbiology, virology and biotechnology; outline of new areas of scientific knowledge; creating modern scientific products and bringing them to practical use; training and integration into the global scientific community of highly qualified and competitive specialists to ensure the labor market, the needs of society and the state, solving issues of quality of life, biological and food security, and innovative development of the country.

Vision. In the perspective, the Institute sees itself as a powerful innovative scientific and educational center with a high corporate culture and constant striving for excellence, which forms leadership positions in the fields of microbiology, virology and biotechnology, provides professional development and creates conditions for creative self-realization, scientific research, integration into international scientific space.

Strategy of the Institute consists in ensuring its leading role in Ukraine and abroad in the field of microbiology, virology and microbial biotechnology; formation of a highly rated, competitive institution with a large-scale international orientation and innovative technologies, in which scientific research is organically combined with the educational process of future specialists in the field of 09 Biology.

The relevance of scientific research, on which scientists of the Institute work, is determined by the urgent needs of the state in the field of medicine, biotechnology, agriculture and ecology. To implement the strategic goal, the Institute conducts fundamental scientific research in three main areas:

  • research of physiological, biochemical and genetic biodiversity and biosynthetic ability of microorganisms of different systematic groups;
  • development of scientific grounds for obtaining new biotechnological products and processes for industry, agriculture, medicine and environmental protection;
  • study of molecular organization of metabolic processes and mechanisms of their regulation by biologically active substances. Study of molecular biology and genetic organization of bacteriophages, adenoviruses and plant viruses, their structural and functional interaction with living systems and the environment.

During the process of implementing planned development strategy, the Institute plans to achieve the position of the best, leading institution in Ukraine in the field of life sciences, as evidenced by the main scientific directions in which research is conducted in departments and laboratories:

  • study of physiology and probiotic properties of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria;
  • development of scientific foundations of microbial bioremediation;
  • study of the impact of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation of the radio frequency range and geoheliocosmic factors on model microorganisms;
  • establishment of etiology and differentiation of viral diseases of major agricultural crops; identification of viruses based on the study of their biological, serological, morphological-structural, physico-chemical and molecular properties;
  • study of the peculiarities of the functioning and correction of microbiocenosis of the phytosphere, its role in increasing the stress resistance and productivity of microbial-plant systems in diverse agrotechnologies;
  • study of microbial destruction of organochlorine pesticides and oil pollution in combination with heavy metals and other xenobiotics for use in environmental protection technologies;
  • conducting microbiological and genetic monitoring of man-made soils, developing molecular genetic test systems for detecting corrosive bacteria and predicting extreme situations;
  • research on the biology of microorganisms and the search for measures to combat the causative agents of human and animal infectious diseases;
  • research of lipopolysaccharides of phytopathogenic bacteria and structural and functional features of proteolytic and glycolytic enzymes;
  • study of the synthesis of biologically active metabolites by soil streptomycetes - antagonists of phytopathogenic microorganisms and nematodes, development of scientific grounds for the creation of biotechnological products with phytoprotective and growth-stimulating action;
  • research of the interaction of methanotrophic, nitrogen-fixing, phosphate-mobilizing and other microorganisms with solid surfaces, including with nanomaterials of various nature, as well as with components of agroecosystems;
  • research of bacteriophages as autonomous genetic elements, phage and plasmid genomics, lysogeny of enterobacteria, as well as macromolecular carotovoricins (carotovoricins of the phage tail type);
  • conducting ecological and physiological fundamental researches of the causative agents of bacterial diseases of most agricultural and a number of technical crops, decorative flowers, fruit and forest species, weeds and aquatic plants; identification of ecological niches of epiphytic survival of phytopathogenic bacteria;
  • study of extremophilic microorganisms of natural and man-made ecosystems;
  • development of microbial methods of obtaining biofuel (low molecular weight alcohols, methane and hydrogen) from organic waste;
  • research on the biological activity of nanoparticles and their use for diagnosis, therapy of bacterial and viral diseases of humans, animals and plants, as well as for targeted drug delivery;
  • studying the fundamental regularities of the molecular mechanisms of virus-cell interaction and developing a strategy for researching the antiviral activity of substances of various nature in the in vitro and in vivo system, conducting their preclinical studies;
  • study of the fundamental foundations of the physiological role of the interferon system and immunoregulatory cytokines in normal conditions and in pathology (infectious-inflammatory diseases of bacterial, viral or mixed viral-bacterial origin, as well as in precancerous and tumorous diseases induced by carcinogenic viruses);
  • determination of immunomodulating properties of new probiotic and prebiotic preparations, created respectively on the basis of lactic acid bacteria and their derivatives;
  • development of new biotechnological grounds for the construction of diagnostic test systems for identification of the causative agents of viral and bacterial infections based on recombinant proteins of human and animal viruses;
  • taxonomy, physiology and ecology of microscopic fungi.

The implementation of the strategic goals of the development of scientific research and educational potential of the Institute of Scientific Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine requires the following measures:

  • strengthening the integration ties of science and higher education, establishing effective interaction between the Institute and universities;
  • stimulate the development of both new scientific schools, centers and laboratories, as well as raising the level of existing ones;
  • intensify publishing activity in authoritative international and national publications;
  • creation of an effective and innovative infrastructure for the development of international cooperation and partnership with research centers of foreign countries, implementation of joint projects and research with international and foreign partners, promotion of internships of employees under international projects and programs, as well as their individual participation in international research projects;
  • promote the participation of scientists in international scientific conferences;
  • promote the development of cooperation with state authorities, entrepreneurs, farmers and industry institutions;
  • to organize and encourage scientists to participate in activities to popularize scientific research in order to increase the prestige of scientific work;
  • develop an algorithm for regular improvement and optimization of the scientific infrastructure of the Institute using European models of science reform;
  • to intensify relations with the public and the information and media space.

Development strategy of the Institute of Microbiology and Virology named after D.K. The Zabolotny National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine honors the historical achievements of the team, has a clear direction to ensure its sustainable functioning and innovative development, constant improvement of the level of scientific research and comprehensive coverage of the obtained achievements, as well as successful implementation of applied developments in practice and integration into the world scientific space.
