Areas of scientific work of the department

Currently, the subject of the department combines fundamental ecological and taxonomic research of bacterial genera Pseudomonas, Bacillus, as well as marine Alteromonas-like bacteria with the study of patterns of production of biologically active substances, in particular, antibiotics, enzymes, pigments, etc.

History

The Department of Antibiotics (Head - Doctor of Medical Sciences L.V. Avdeeva) was founded by Academician D.K. Zabolotnyi in 1928 and was then called the Department of Medical Microbiology, in 1938 it was renamed the Department of Pathogenic Microorganisms (in 1930, the department was headed by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Prof. M.I. Shtutser, from 1931 to 1962 - Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Prof. V.G. Drobotko), since 1963 it was called the Department of Antibiotics (heads: 1963-1978 - Doctor of Biological Sciences, Prof. B. Yu. Eisenman, 1978-2002 - Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Prof. V. V. Smirnov, 2003-2006 - PhD V. O. Prykhodko).

The main directions of the department's work in previous years were the research of the biology of microorganisms and the search for measures to combat the causative agents of infectious diseases of humans and animals, fundamental research of antibiotics from higher plants, taxonomic research of bacterial genera Pseudomonas, Bacillus, marine proteobacteria and determination of antibiotic activity of various classes of biologically active substances synthesized by these microorganisms.

Based on bacteria of the genus Bacillus created probiotics for veterinary purposes Bacterin-SL, Endosporin, as well as for medical purposes - Biosporin and Subalin, biological preparation for crop production - Phytosporin, etc. On the basis of strains of bacillus, lactite and lactulose, the synbiotic preparation "Bacilact™", preparations for the biological protection of plants from phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria, a composition for the utilization of harvest residues were created, the biotechnological basis of creation was developed and a melanin-containing preparation was obtained.

Based on the results of fundamental research, antibiotics were obtained from plants - novoimanin, salvin, arenarin, cernuol, complex antibiotic drug cerbidene, meroterpene phenol bakuchiol, etc. Based on strains P. aureofaciens a complex insectofungicidal preparation for plant protection - haupsin - was created. From a new species P. batumici the anti-staphylococcal antibiotic batumin was obtained. On the basis of this antibiotic, a bituminous ointment was developed for the treatment of staphylococcal infections, as well as the diagnostic drug "Diastaf" for rapid identification of staphylococci. In addition, the department conducts fundamental research on the process of biofilm formation and degradation Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as the search for substances that suppress the growth of these microorganisms in the composition of the biofilm.  

Scientific work

Today, the subject of the department includes fundamental taxonomic research of bacterial genera Bacillus and Pseudomonas, study of patterns of production, nature and mechanism of action of their biologically active substances, development of scientific bases for the creation of biological preparations for various branches of the economy.

Employees of the department made a significant contribution to the creation of an evolutionarily based taxonomy of the studied genera of bacteria. The department maintains a collection of microorganisms, which includes more than 550 strains of bacteria of the genus Bacillus, isolated from various ecological and climate-geographic zones of the globe, in particular, the soils of Israel, Egypt, Thailand, the UAE, and Ukraine. The department also created a collection of bacterial strains of the genus Pseudomonas and phylogenetically related taxa, marine Alteromonas-like bacteria, international test strains for drug control, which are part of the Ukrainian collection of microorganisms and have the status of national scientific property.

Developments of the department, which currently employs 2 doctors of science, 7 PhDs, are implemented in various branches of the national economy of Ukraine. Over the past few years, 6 license agreements have been signed with Ukrainian and foreign enterprises for the production of biological preparations for plant protection.

З 2007 р. керує відділом антибіотиків   Інституту мікробіології і вірусології ім. Д.К.Заболотного НАН України, де очолює наукові напрямки фундаментальних досліджень з вивчення закономірностей біосинтезу, природи, механізму дії метаболітів (антибіотиків, ферментів, фітогормонів, пігментів, екзополімерних сполук тощо) бактерій родів Bacillus and Pseudomonas, which are promising in the composition of biological preparations for various purposes.

Scope of activity also includes the development of scientific bases for the creation of new antimicrobial drugs, probiotics and synbiotics based on bacteria of the genus Bacillus, preparations for the protection of agricultural plants from phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi. Avdeeva L.V. makes a significant contribution to the support and expansion of the Ukrainian collection of microorganisms, which has the status of the National Property of Ukraine.

One of Ukraine's leading specialists in the problem of antibiotic resistance of microorganisms, prevention and treatment of purulent-inflammatory diseases. She repeatedly completed internships in various US institutions on infection control issues, was a scientific consultant for the joint American-Ukrainian project "Mother and Child Health".

Member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Microbiology and Virology named after D.K. Zabolotny of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, specialized scientific councils: D 26.233.01 at the Institute of Microbiology and Virology named after D.K. A permanent member of the examination committee of the Institute of Microbiology and Virology named after D.K. Zabolotny of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for the admission of candidacy exams in the specialty "microbiology", and is also the deputy head of the bioethics commission of the Institute.

Currently, is a part-time professor of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology_NNC "Institute of Biology and Medicine" of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. During her scientific and pedagogical activity, she was the supervisor of bachelor's and master's theses. In addition, 6 PhD theses were defended under her supervision.

She is the co-author of more than 350 scientific works, including 3 monographs, 2 textbooks, 2 manuals, more than 150 articles in leading national and foreign scientific journals, 2 invention patents, 9 utility model patents.
