At the end of April 2022, the Working Group on the preservation of the Ukrainian collection of microorganisms (UCM) under martial law was established on the initiative of the Directorate of D.K. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IMV NASU). UCM is the largest in Ukraine collection of non-pathogenic strains of bacteria and microscopic fungi, including yeast. The collection has the status of an object of the National Heritage of Ukraine (Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of April 1, 1999 № 527) and is registered in the World Data Centre for Microorganisms – WDCM (acronym – UCM, number – 1203) (https://imv.org.ua/ucm/).
On May 24, 2022, the Zoom Conference was held at IMV NASU between the Working Group on the preservation of UCM and Dr Kirk Broders, the Curator and Leading Scientist of NRRL / ARS Culture Collection of the US Department of Agriculture, which is one of the largest and most famous collections of microorganisms in the world (https://nrrl.ncaur.usda.gov/). The NRRL / ARS Culture Collection contains over 98,000 strains of bacteria and microscopic fungi, including yeast, and is housed at the National Centre for Agricultural Utilization Research in Peoria, Illinois.
This is the first time such contact between UKM and one of the most influential foreign collections in the world has taken place.
At the Zoom conference, Kirk Broders spoke about the history of NRRL / ARS collection of industrial and agricultural microorganisms, shared the experience of work at this collection, the peculiarities of methodological approaches and the strategies for preservation of microbial strains, including under conditions of critical situations and disasters.
After a comparative analysis and generalization of the experience of maintaining microorganisms in NRRL / ARS and other most famous collections in the world, the Working Group is planning to inform all curators of UKM, responsible for the certain groups of microorganisms, as well as all interested employees of IMV NASU, who need to store valuable strains of microorganisms in their working collections.
Наприкінці квітня 2022 року з ініціативи Дирекції Інституту мікробіології і вірусології ім. Д.К. Заболотного НАН України (ІМВ НАНУ) було створено Робочу групу з питань збереження за умов воєнного стану Української колекції мікроорганізмів – найбільшої в Україні колекції непатогенних штамів бактерій і мікроскопічних грибів, включаючи дріжджі. Колекція має статус об’єкта Національного Надбання України (Постанова КМУ від 1 квітня 1999 р. № 527) та зареєстрована у Всесвітньому центрі даних про мікроорганізми (акронім – UCM, номер – 1203) (http://ucm.org.ua/?page_id=16).
24 травня 2022 року в ІМВ НАНУ відбулася Zoom-конференція між Робочою групою по збереженню колекції УКМ та доктором Кірком Бродерсом − куратором і провідним вченим колекції культур NRRL / ARS Міністерства сільського господарства США, яка є однією з найбільших і найвідоміших у світі колекцій мікроорганізмів (https://nrrl.ncaur.usda.gov/).Колекція культур NRRL містить понад 98000 штамів бактерій та мікроскопічних грибів, включаючи дріжджі, і зберігається в Національному центрі досліджень використання сільського господарства в Пеорії, штат Іллінойс (США)
Такий контакт між УКМ та однією із найвпливовіших закордонних колекцій світу відбувся вперше.
На Zoom-конференції Кірк Бродерс розповів про історію створення колекції промислово- і сільськогосподарсько-важливих мікроорганізмів, поділився досвідом роботи колекції NRRL / ARS, особливостями методичних підходів і стратегіями зберігання штамів мікроорганізмів, в тому числі за умов критичних ситуацій і катастроф.
Після порівняльного аналізу і узагальнення досвіду підтримання мікроорганізмів в NRRL / ARS та інших найбільш відомих колекціях світу Робочою групою планується ознайомити з цією інформацією всіх кураторів УКМ, відповідальних за окремі групи мікроорганізмів, а також, всіх зацікавлених співробітників ІМВ НАНУ, у яких є необхідність зберігання цінних штамів мікроорганізмів в робочих колекціях.
